Chapter 7: Hunter

After the singalong, Hunter walked Brooke back to the Aphrodite cabin where she kissed him for a while before saying good night and going to her cabin. Hunter eventually made his way back to Hermes cabin and fell into his bed. He didn't sleep. Mostly because of what had happened only a couple of hours beforehand and also because of the weird feeling he had when he thought about Brooke. Before all of this he saw Brooke and she seemed bubbly and cute and fun and he really thought that dating her would be really cool. He thought it was what he really wanted, but now that he was actually dating her, it seemed different.

The term dating is used generously. When he woke up the next morning, he was regretting the day a little bit. He knew that there was this rush from the capture the flag game and he assumed that was what was making Brooke so interested. Hunter rolled out of bed and pulled on a pair of khaki shorts and a t-shirt that said "My other shirt is clever." He walked outside, slipping on his shoes and hopping on one foot while he finished tying the knot in his laces. Looking somewhat presentable, he headed to the mess hall. It was mostly empty except for a few people. His eyes scanned the Aphrodite table and saw Arabella sitting there, talking to one of her brothers.

He was curious about what Brooke was like and if someone knew about something like that, it would probably be one of Brooke's siblings. He took a deep breath and started to walk over to the table. Why did he feel a little nervous? The ice had been broken between them. That was the hardest part, right? It didn't help that he was worried that she had discovered that it was Hunter who had saved her. He was about to speak when he saw a flash of red hair and felt lips on his.

"Hey, there, hot stuff." She said, putting her hands on his neck. Hunter looked down at her and smiled a little.

"Good morning." He said, placing his hands on her sides. "How'd you sleep?"

"I missed you." She said, running her hands down his arms and to his waist. "I slept okay. I was tired after last night." She looked up at him a second and rubbed her eyes. It was times like this that Hunter thought she was adorable. He pulled her in a little bit closer and kissed her forehead. He smiled at her and she looked up at him with big eyes. "Why are you so adorable?!" She said with a giggle before taking his hand. "Come on. Carry my food." Hunter laughed a little and then followed her through the line.  At the end of the line, Hunter was about to hand her a tray of food when she pushed herself against him and kissed him. Hunter thought it went a little long just as she slid her fingers into his pockets and pulled him closer. After a second, he relaxed into the kiss and let his lips respond to hers. He was really starting like her. "Thanks, babe!" She said finally breaking away.

"I'll see you after breakfast." He said, but she had already walked to her table where she met several giggling girls who had apparently watched the not-so-brief make-out session in the middle of the lunch room. Hunter, feeling a little embarrassed, walked over to the Hermes table and sat down across from Jake.

"You lucky son of a bitch." Jake said with a smile on his face. "Why didn't you tell me you were hitting that?" Hunter blinked at him a second before taking a bite of hash browns.

"I'm not sure when we were on such terms where we would discuss my love life." He said, scooping some egg onto his spoon. "On top of that, I'd prefer you not to talk about my mother that way." Jake rolled his eyes.

"Come on. It's not like I want all your dirty details. I'm-"

"There are no dirty details. She kissed me after I captured the flag."

"And after that. You probably went back to her cabin and-"

"Nope. Just hung out. It was cool." Jake looked at him like he had 4 heads.

"What are you, gay?" Hunter reached over and slugged him in the arm.

"Don't be jealous, Jake. It doesn't suit you." He said with a laugh as he finished his breakfast. "Come on, brother. Let's get some training in. I'm feeling good about fighting today."

"Don't you have to wait for your girlfriend?" He said, nodding toward the Aphrodite table. He stood up and stretched a little then grabbed his tray.

"She trains by practicing cutting hair or by getting a tan. We're going to actually train." Hunter said before walking with Jake to drop off their trays and then leave. "You're going down, man."

"What's with the go-getter attitude?" He said, stretching again. Hunter sighed.

"I don't know. I'm just feeling really good." He nodded and took a deep breath, smiling a little.

"Hey, Hunter!" Hunter turned around just as Brooke threw herself at him, putting her arms around his neck. "You trying to ditch me so soon, Hunter?" Hunter kissed her lightly on the lips.

"No, Jake and I were going to do some training. Like fighting and stuff." He said, pulling away from her. "Have you met Jake?" She looked at Jake a second and then turned back to Hunter.

"Well, can I watch? See my man do what he does best?" Hunter glanced at Jake.

"Yeah. Sure. Why not?" Hunter said with a shrug. Brooke took Hunter's arm and turned to Jake.

"You might not know this, but my Hunter just won the last capture the flag game." She said, patting Hunter's hand. Jake looked over her head at Hunter and then at Brooke.

"Yes. I did  know that, being on his team and everything." Jake said with a nod. "I've also known him for 4 years longer than you." Jake said under his breath, turning his head a little so Brooke wouldn't hear.

"Well, he also saved a girl the other day from an out of control pegasus." Jake looked at Hunter a little impressed.

"Well, again I didn't really do much. I was just along for the ride really." He walked to the center of the arena and finally pulled away from Brooke. "Alright. We're going to train now."

"Good luck, Jake. You're going to need it." She said, stepping back and sitting down, crossing her legs. "Go, Hunter!" Hunter drew his sword and swung it a few times. He was always in a state of focus when he fought, but now with Brooke there he was scared that he couldn't focus. He would always be trying to impress her. He was thinking about that when he felt the shaft of a spear hit him hard in the side of the neck.

"Oh, were you not ready?" Jake said with a laugh as he helped him up. Hunter sighed and rubbed his neck. This was going to really suck. He shook himself and then took a fighting stance.

"Shake it off, Hunter! He caught you offguard." Brooke cheered, looking at him while he prepared to fight. Hunter tried to block her out, but she was making it pretty tough. He just wished that Jake wasn't trying to actively take him out. Hunter blocked a swing from Jake and parried another. He rolled under his spear and hit him with the side of his blade. Jake responded by kneeing him in the chest. "Hey, that's not a fair hit!"

"We're fighting!" Jake said as he brought his spear hard at the ground. Hunter managed to roll to the side and kick his leg out from under him. They both quickly stood up and took stances again. Jake swung and Hunter locked it with his sword.

"Dude, you trying to embarrass me?" Hunter whispered before Jake pushed him away and locked up again.

"I'm not going to make myself look weak just to make you look good in front of your new arm candy." He put his foot behind Hunter's and then pushed, knocking him onto his back. Hunter rolled backward onto his feet and looked at Brooke who seemed very underwhelmed. Hunter gripped his sword and slashed at Jake in rapid succession. Jake backed away from him, dodging and blocking his strikes. Hunter finally feigned a strike and then spun around and jabbed him in the stomach with the butt of his sword.

"Good job, Hunter!" Brooke shouted, clapping loudly. Hunter glanced back for one second, but that was long enough for Jake to smack him in the chest. Hunter looked forward again and Jake swung down. Hunter blocked it, but Jake shoved him back and attacked again. "Get him! You can do it!" Hunter looked over for a split second which again was long enough for Jake to smack him in the side. Hunter, in a daze, fell down and groaned as his body ached.

"Good fight, man." Jake said, offering him his hand. Hunter stood and stretched a little.

"That's gonna bruise." He said quietly as he rubbed his chest. Brooke joined him a second later.

"Hunter, how could you lose to him?" Brooke asked with an eyebrow raised. Hunter looked at Jake who excitedly waited for how Hunter was going to get out of this.

"Well, I was uh...I guess I just couldn't keep my eyes off you." He said, putting an arm around her. Brooke rolled her eyes a little and kissed his cheek.

"Come on! Let's go swimming. You can check me out in my new bikini." She said, taking his hand then running off through the arena.
